Overview

Kenya pairs naturally with Tanzania. From July to October the migration herds cross into the Masai Mara, and Amboseli offers elephants with Kilimanjaro behind them.

Kenya’s classic safari combines the Masai Mara with the Rift Valley lakes (Nakuru and Naivasha) and Amboseli at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Further north, Samburu and Laikipia have dry-country species, and Tsavo’s huge parks lie on the road to the coast.

Kenya combines easily with northern Tanzania: Amboseli is close to the Namanga border on the road to Arusha, and flights link Nairobi with Kilimanjaro.

Health

Ask your doctor about malaria prevention and vaccinations, and take travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.

Money

The Kenyan shilling is the currency; cards and mobile payments are widely used, and US dollars are accepted at many lodges.

Practical tips

  • Apply for your electronic travel authorisation before you fly.
