Overview
In the north the tide stays high enough to swim all day. Nungwi is lively with dhow builders and beach bars; Kendwa next door is calmer, with long white sand.
Nungwi and Kendwa sit on Zanzibar’s northern tip. The tide here goes out much less than on the east coast, so you can swim at most times of day, and the west-facing beach at Kendwa is known for its sunsets.
Nungwi is a traditional dhow-building village, and boat trips leave for snorkelling around Mnemba Atoll and sunset cruises.
